On the Occasion of 2009 New Undergraduate Student Admissions

On behalf of Ramkhamhaeng University it is my great pleasure to welcome all 2009 new students. You should rightfully be very proud of yourself for taking this opportunity to become a student with this famous and esteemed university.
Established in 1971according to the Ramkhamhaeng University Act, Ramkhamhaeng University is a government educational institution whose goal is to provide education in the form of an “academic marketplace”. Its administration philosophy emphasizes providing educational opportunities and equality to all the people of Thailand, based on its capacity in educational management at the local, national and international levels. The university adheres to the principle of providing highly-qualified graduates and universal educational services which correspond to the needs of community and society at large.

The university has successfully and efficiently performed the 4 missions of our institution for higher education namely: providing teaching and learning, undergoing research, providing educational services to communities, and nurturing Thai arts and culture. Furthermore, the university has initiated a fifth mission which is to produce “knowledgeable and ethical” graduates. Our graduates must be knowledgeable, capable, thoughtful and ethical; individuals who believe in the virtue of goodness and dedicate himself or herself to the country.

Ramkhamhaeng University has been in service for 37 years and is now moving into its 38th year. At present, Ramkhamhaeng University is one of Thailand’s foremost institutions for higher education. The university has provided extensive educational opportunities and equality both inside and outside the country. The education provided covers Bachelor’s Degree Programs, Master’s Degree Programs, PhD Programs, International Programs and Special Program curriculum. The curriculum has been continuously developed and many new programs have been offered at all levels in order to keep pace with the drastic and rapid changes that are taking place in this age of globalization, to supply the needs of the labor market and to be able to compete in education at an international level. There are systems to guarantee curriculum quality and standards at all levels. Our educational quality assurance procedure is accountable and acceptable and carried out at an international standard.

To provide more educational opportunities, those who hold junior high school certificates are allowed to audit for a subject of their interest, which can later be transferred into cumulative credits when they apply to study in Bachelor’s Degree Programs at Ramkhamhaeng University.

In an effort to provide equal opportunity in education for all Thais throughout the nation, former President Rangsan Saengsook has established several RU Regional Campuses since 1995, and at present there are 23 regional campuses nationwide. The regional campuses provide Bachelor’s Degree Program, Master’s Degree Programs, PhD Programs, and also allow interested people to sit in a class, similar to the programs offered in the central campus. The teaching, learning and assessment systems at the regional campuses are of the same standard as at central Ramkhamhaeng University. In order to facilitate the exams for regional students, the university has set up 76 exam centers in all 76 provinces. Special Programs in both Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees are additionally offered in 56 provinces in all regions.

On February 7, 2006, the cabinet approved the project to upgrade “Ramkhamhaeng University Sukhothai Campus in Honour of His Majesty the King” to become “Ramkhamhaeng University Sukhothai Campus”. A government budget has been allocated for campus construction, which is, at present, in progress. When the construction is complete, the new faculty will be opened at this campus. Ramkhamhaeng University and the Sukhothai people are very proud of the new university campus located in Sukhothai, a historic city and former capital of the Thai people.

To provide academic opportunity to the Thais residing overseas, Ramkhamhaeng University has expanded its services and offered the Bachelor’s Degree and Master’s Degree Programs in 29 countries around the world. 38 examination centers have been set up in those countries, and the numbers continues to increase. In arranging the overseas examinations, Ramkhamhaeng University has received the full support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in providing examination locations at their embassies and consulates. Therefore, Ramkhamhaeng University has become the first university in Thailand to practically expand the academic services overseas.

At present, Ramkhamhaeng University is making rapid changes and development in all areas. It is accepted nationally and internationally as one of the most prominent government institutions for higher education in Thailand. It’s a leading institution which provides a great variety of programs, distance education system and the first Thai e-university format. The university has made outstanding improvements in applying modern information technology and communication technology to all areas and levels of teaching and learning systems. Ramkhamhaeng University has led the Thai Higher Education system to compete academically with other countries. Due to its academic success nationally and internationally, Ramkhamhaeng University has made its way to become a global university.

Annually, a great number of students and interested people apply to study at all academic levels at Rakhamahaeng University. They are confident about our reputation, academic excellence, continuous support and the system applied by the university to offer educational opportunities to Thais inside and outside the country. As a part of becoming a global university, the university has adjusted the roles and responsibilities to meet global changes. The university has extended its cooperation and widened its scope of contact with various private and government institutions and organizations both nationally and internationally.

Ramkhamhaeng University is the largest university in Thailand, comprising of over 500,000 students. Since being established in 1971, the university has produced more than 600,000 Bachelor’s degree graduates, and more than 50,00 - 60,000 Master degree and certificate graduates. The university has an important role in developing national education and human resources due to the fact that RU graduates have serviced their communities and the country in the private sector, government offices and various places around the world. RU graduates have proved to be qualified, knowledgeable, capable, industrious, and responsible. They are the confirmation that our university has succeeded in its goals. They are the pride of our university, the light referred to by our university motto, “Candle gives light, Ramkhamhaeng shows a way.”

One of the firm objectives of the university is to provide equal academic opportunity to knowledge seekers to study broadly and freely. Therefore, our teaching and learning systems include qualified standards, training, workshops and internships so as to provide the students with real-life situations, and practical lessons about responsibility and decision making. Using teaching materials, textbooks and handbooks published and provided by the university as well as e-book services, the students can choose to study on-campus or off-campus. Applying for the admission at the university campus is very convenient and quick. It takes only a few minutes. Such a quick and convenient admission system won Ramkhamhaeng University the People Service Reward from the Office of the Public Sector Development Commission (OPDC), which is an acknowledgement of the excellent enrollment procedure for the undergraduate level in 2008.

After the completion of admission procedure, everyone is proudly known as “Luk Poh Khun” (a child of King Ramkhamhaeng).
